When I was a small child in Southeastern Idaho with my colored pencils and crayons, I never imagined that someday I would live a stone’s throw from the Pacific Ocean. It is magic.

When I moved to California in the 1960’s, I never imagined that I would someday have my own art studio. But when I finally had a chance to go to college, I knew my major would be art.

I believe that an artist’s style and approach to their work is a reflection of who they are, where they live and with whom they have studied.

My thought process as an artist was greatly influenced by a professor at Sonoma State University. Abstract Expressionist Jay DeFeo was exceptionally creative. She would bring her sources of inspiration to class, from a cup handle to a tooth that had been pulled. She preached you could not wait for inspiration, saying it began in the studio. She was a great believer in serendipity, always encouraging us to leave that part of the painting that “just happened.”

Serendipity certainly applies to painting with encaustic. The heated wax is hard to control and your images are serendipitous by nature. I have worked with encaustic for about four years, studying with Sandi Miot, Patricia Seggebruch and encaustic printmaker, Paula Roland. During 2011, my focus was entirely on encaustic monoprints and that year’s work culminated in a show at the Dolphin Gallery titled “Hot Wax and Cool Furniture.”

My early training was as an oil painter. After a hiatus from painting of about 25 years, I fell in love with the intense color of soft pastel and began working in this medium. I have worked with pastel for more than 10 years. Over time, I have studied with many wonderful artists, most recently, Terri Ford. In 2010 I was asked to have my pastel work included in the book, Pastel & Pencil Artists of the South Mendocino and North Sonoma Coast by Peter Dobbins and Bill Lange.

My work has been exhibited in both juried and local shows, winning awards, and has become part of numerous local and national private collections.

I have a BA in Fine Arts, graduating with Honors and Distinction from Sonoma State University and a MA, Interior Design, graduating with Honors and Distinction from Mt. Vernon College, George Washington University.
