Jennifer Bundey - Watercolors and Acrylics

Holy Fire by Jennifer Bundey

I paint because I love color: its spirit, character and nuances. Through painting I explore the drama between light and darkness. I believe that colors heal the soul, both of the artist and the viewer.

Painting is a contemplative process for me. I simply start with color. Gradually the composition arises out of the color. The less I impose my ideas onto the painting, the more the work takes on a life and character of its own.

Close Ties by Jennifer Bundey

In watercolors, my starting point is "veil painting," a process in which every wash must dry before another is applied. I begin with one or two colors in transparent tones. As the layers build and overlap, new color tones and values are created. I intensify some areas until they become opaque, and leave others as almost invisible veils. I watch for forms to emerge, and assist their appearance. A period of artistic tension follows, until the work feels complete.

Acrylics enable me to find new levels of intensity and playfulness. In one series I have chosen a set of colors based on the rainbow sequence. Each painting is dedicated to one color, enhanced by others that help to create a unique mood for the primary tone. My paintings also explore soul moods, such as piety and passion. Ultimately, the colors speak for themselves.
