My work is called "veil painting," a process in which every
wash of color must dry before another is applied. As the layers
build and overlap, new color tones and values are created. Some
areas are intensified until they become opaque; others are left as
almost invisible veils. I watch for forms to emerge and I assist
their appearance, though not in every detail. I leave the
interpretation to the imagination of the viewer.

My studio is in the redwood forest above the Pacific Ocean. I have
painted the room with multiple layers of transparent acrylics to create
an effect similar to my watercolor veil paintings. The walls are covered
with delicate veils of color that gradually shift from warm tones in the
activity spaces, to cooler tones in the quiet

spaces. No surface is one flat color. Visitors comment on the atmosphere
of serenity.

I give private
lessons and group workshops in wet method watercolor painting in my
Gualala studio and in the East Bay. My goal is to help people become
comfortable with the tools and the colors, to let go of self-criticism
and to enter into the spirit of the process. Color heals the soul - of
the painter and of the observer.
